'I'm scared' - Hungry elephant smashes into van for a snack

December 15, 2023

A hungry elephant smashed its way inside a tourist's van in Sri Lanka - all for a snack - leaving the Perth family shocked.

The Basnayake family were on their way to a temple in a national park recently when the elephant approached and smashed its trunk through the driver's window, spraying glass throughout the inside of the car.

Its trunk snaked its way to the back seat, where Kasun Basnayake and his six-year-old son were sitting.

"Can we get out? I'm scared," the child said in a shocking video of the incident taken by Kasun.

"I could see one of his tusks at the back of my driver [seat] and I was like, where's the other tusk?" Kasun told 9News.

The unseen tusk had punctured the driver's side door.

Kasun started throwing lunch leftovers the elephant's way.

"The reason these things happen is people have been feeding these wild animals on the road," he said.

"So, these animals, rather than trying to find food on their own, they can probably get an easy meal by just attacking a van."

The family sped off, but not before the elephant took one last passing shot, puncturing another two holes in the van. While the vehicle was heavily damaged, none of the passengers were injured.

"It's a memorable Sri Lankan holiday for us I would say," Kasun laughed.
