Eight-hour standoff after 'drunk' men cause chaos on Perth roof

December 15, 2023

Two “drunk men” caused an eight-hour police standoff after climbing onto the top of a construction site roof in Perth yesterday.

The duo, in their 20s, allegedly scaled the scaffolding of the Riverdale site at around 1.15 am yesterday morning (local time), 9News reports.

Footage of the men taken at the time appeared to show them roughhousing and drinking vodka on the roof before eventually falling asleep. Firefighters attempted to use a cherry picker to get them down.

When they woke up, they caused chaos onsite, shaking the scaffolding and throwing bags of concrete onto the ground.

When a police negotiator arrived, the men tried to have fun engaging.

"We're ready to make a deal. We want a four-pack of cruisers," one man said.

" … and a vape," the other added.

One of the men yelled: “I want a helicopter”, to members of the media watching the chaos unfold.

While the two men continued their drunken behaviour, workers waited below, unable to access the site.

"When I rocked up, I saw 'em – they had him a bottle of vodka with 'em. so I was just like, 'looks like they're having a good time'," one of the workers told 9News.

"But obviously, it's unsafe for them to be up there."

Police Minister Paul Papalia called their behaviour “complete stupidity”.

"What a waste of time and actually potentially putting other people in, at harm, to effectively rescue them," he said.

Police found a woman on the third floor, escorting her out of the building – but the two men refused to come down.

At around 10am, over eight hours after their antics began, the men came down — sprinting down the street to get away from police.

They were unsuccessful — being driven away in a police van.

The two were charged with trespass, stealing and behaving disorderly.

As they were escorted away, reporters asked if they had a big night, with one replying, “F***ing oath”.
