Two men have been arrested for importing “large amounts” of ketamine into the country.
The arrests come after six search warrants were carried out by police and Customs as part of an investigation into the importing supply and distribution of the drug in Wellington.
Police say early estimates indicate 11 kilograms of ketamine were seized in the Wellington and Kāpiti searches, as well as “quantities” of MDMA ecstasy.
“Authorities are continuing enquiries into identifying the supplier responsible for exporting the ketamine to New Zealand,” a spokesperson said.
The two men, aged 19 and 20, will appear in court facing charges of importing a class C controlled drug and possession for supply of a class B controlled drug.
Ketamine is currently a class C controlled drug, while MDMA is a class B.
It’s believed the offending spans between June 2022 and October this year “and, in some cases, included drugs being imported in packaging masked as anti-inflammatory medication”.
Police and Customs say they are “committed” to disrupting the importation of illegal drugs.
