Man arrested on rape charges, complaint of potential human trafficking

Operation Wentworth has resulted in the arrest of a 44-year-old man.

An investigation has been launched and a man arrested after a complaint of migrant exploitation and potential human trafficking was lodged with Hawke’s Bay Police and Immigration New Zealand last week.

"Operation Wentworth" has resulted in the arrest of the man on three rape charges, with further charges "likely to follow".

As a result of a search warrant, two migrants were served Deportation Liability Notices and Immigration enquiries are continuing.

The man is due to appear in the Hastings District Court today.

This complaint was referred to Hawke’s Bay Police, who confirmed the investigation is "ongoing".

Police urged anyone who may have been a victim of similar offending in the Hawke’s Bay region to come forward, and assured any further victims that complaints were being taken seriously.

"If you are a migrant, and think you are being exploited, do not be afraid to ask Immigration or police for help," a spokesperson said.
