Five Big Things: Monday, December 11

December 11, 2023

Good evening. It's been a day of protesters vandalising an English Te Tiriti display panel at Te Papa, devastation for the family of a slain mum-of-four, and the Prime Minister insisting fees-free prescriptions will go.

1 Family of slain Kiwi mum-of-four are 'totally devastated'

The whānau of a New Zealand mother-of-four killed in a domestic violence incident in Australia have said they're "totally devastated".

The victim has been named as Siva Auvae. Police said she was attacked by her long-term partner Anaru Ormond, who died in hospital after being found badly burned. He had tried to burn down their house after attacking Auvae.

Auvae had been repeatedly stabbed, police said, with neighbours finding her and calling emergency services.

3 Christopher Luxon insists fees-free prescriptions will go

National says it will bring back the $5 prescription fee for those not on SuperGold cards or Community Services cards despite a fresh poll indicating most Kiwis want the fees to remain free.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said that wealthy people should not be subsidised for a $5 fee when that money could be better put toward meeting other health outcomes, such as cancer drugs.

4 Cyclone Jasper: Communities brace for power outages, disruptions

Residents of far north Queensland are bracing for possible power outages, internet and water supply disruptions with the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

As of 4.30am on Monday, Jasper had weakened again to a category 1 system and was about 600km east of Cairns and 530km northeast of Townsville.
