A Tauranga man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a woman's purse and bank cards from her husband's phone case while her husband suffered a "medical event".
The couple were in heavy traffic while driving down Te Awanui Dr towards Mount Maunganui on November 27 when the man suffered a "medical event".
Members of the public stopped to help the man while emergency services arrived, and he was later taken to hospital.
The "distressed" woman was driven to the hospital to be with her husband.
En route, the woman discovered her purse was missing. Returning to the vehicle later, she discovered her husband's bank cards had been stolen from his phone case.
She called the bank, who confirmed the cards had been used at various retail outlets in the area.
A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged with theft and using a stolen card. He will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Monday.
