Speeding learner driver admits manslaughter after crash kills 18-year-old

Adam Rapson

An 18-year-old learner driver has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a passenger in his car died while he was speeding in North Canterbury in September.

The court heard Adam Rapson was driving up to 147km/h when he lost control and crashed into a property in Rangiora.

Eighteen-year-old Zara Mitchell died at the scene while two others were left injured.

Rapson had earlier been stopped by police and issued with a non-operation order, due to the condition of the car, which the court heard was pieced together with a variety of mismatched and cracked rims, and had little to no tread on some tyres.

The car had no registration visible and the Warrant of Fitness sticker had been scratched off.

Today in the High Court at Christchurch, Rapson pleaded guilty to six charges and was remanded in custody until sentencing in February.
