SH1 in Kekerengu closed in both directions after serious crash

State Highway 1 north of Kaikōura is expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours following a serious two-car crash this afternoon.

Police were called to the scene in Kekerengu, south of Blenheim, shortly after 1.30pm.

Diversions are in place, and the road is expected to be closed for "a long period of time", police said.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advised northbound motorists leaving Christchurch to consider taking the SH7 Lewis Pass route through to Springs Junction, SH65 to Murchison and SH6/63 through to Blenheim, and vice versa for southbound travel.

"Please avoid this area or delay your journey if possible," it said on X.
