Australia is preparing for an intense summer heatwave this weekend, with temperatures forecasted to soar into the 40s across most of the country.

The extreme weather brings with it heightened risks of bush fires, particularly in Sydney, where temperatures are expected to reach their highest levels in four years.

With nearly half of Australia already on high alert due to Cyclone Jasper, the soaring temperatures have prompted widespread fire warnings.

New South Wales Ambulance associate director Marty Nichols urged everyone to prepare.

"It's something that everyone should be concerned for and prepare for and that's what you should do today," he said.

Sydney is bracing for temperatures to climb to 44C, reminiscent of the conditions during the Black Summer bush fires.

Coastal New South Wales has so far escaped the brunt of the heat, but no area is expected to be spared in the coming days.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll advised residents to stay informed with a plea to, "Please, just listen to the radio, newspaper, traditional media. Whatever it is. But just be well informed."

June marked the start of a string of record-breaking hot months globally, and this weekend's heatwave could set 2023 on track to be the hottest year in 125,000 years.

Nichols highlighted the dangers of the heat warning residents, "Heat-related illness... can go all the way through to being a life-threatening condition if you don't manage yourself well during these hot days."

He said the vulnerability of the elderly and young was particularly concerning, and urged those with health conditions to seek out cool locations and to stay hydrated.
