Councilors say it’s a waste of money that the city cannot afford (Source: Breakfast)

A bus stop is to be moved away from in front of a Hamilton sex shop, with a council officer saying it is a safety issue.

After complaints, the stop is set to be moved 100m along the street, costing the council and Waka Kotahi $700,000.

Some councillors say the shift is a waste of money, but others say it's a matter of public safety.

Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Hamilton City Council's public transport and urban mobility manger Martin Parks said the crux of the project is around the safety of public transport users.

"The complaints we've had over the past few years have been about location – certainly outside the sex shop – but there is more concern about safety of people trying to access public transport facilities in that area."

"The bus stop itself is on a busy four lane road in Hamilton and it's opposite the Hamilton Transport Centre so there's a lot of activity across the road and the current facilities are no longer fit for purpose."

Parks said a lot of young people and students catch the bus from that stop, which is where a lot of complaints have stemmed from in regards to the adult toy shop, Peaches and Cream .

He said $700,000 to move a bus stop may seem like a lot of money, but it also includes a light-patrolled pedestrian crossing, and the bus stop itself is a small fraction of the overall cost.
