The unexplained death of a man found off Waiheke Island is no longer being treated as suspicious, police have said.

The body of Lee Douglas Perry, 48, was found in the water on Wednesday November 15.

Sergeant Chris Allan said police had been treating the death as unexplained while inquiries were ongoing.

"We can now confirm we are not currently treating the death of Mr Perry as suspicious and are making inquiries on behalf of the Coroner."

Police earlier determined a burned-out vehicle, found 14km from Perry's body, belonged to him. Allan said Perry had travelled to Waiheke Island earlier in the week for work.

"An investigation on the circumstances around Mr Perry’s vehicle and how it came to become crashed and burnt-out remains ongoing, however police are treating this, and his death, as two separate incidents.

"Mr Perry’s family has been advised of this development and they are continuing to be supported by Victim Support."

Allan said police would still like to hear from anyone with information about Perry's vehicle, a white Mazda Demio, registration HLZ228.
