Killer’s family knew Gabby Petito was dead weeks before discovery - report

December 6, 2023

Brian Laundrie, who murdered his girlfriend Gabby Petitio, allegedly told his family she was dead weeks before her body was found.

CNN have reported that according to an amended civil complaint filed by Petito’s parents on November 30, Laundrie told his parents Gabby Petito was “gone” during frantic phone call.

Petito's parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, are suing Laundrie’s parents and their attorney, claiming they "intentionally withheld information about 22-year-old Gabby Petito’s death, causing them pain and emotional distress", CCN reported.

Petito was discovered slain in September 2021 on the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, one of the places the young couple had visited during a cross-country van trip that ended with Laundrie mysteriously returning home alone to Florida in the vehicle.

Police were still investigating Petito's death when Laundrie's remains were found in 2021.

He was reported missing from his home in North Port on September 17, two days after he was named a person of interest in Petito's disappearance.

Laundrie, named a "person of interest" in the case, was missing for a month before his skeletal remains were found in October 2021, in a swampy wilderness park near his home.

The case drew worldwide interest and numerous theories online from amateur true-crime sleuths.

It has also thrown a spotlight on the many missing-persons cases involving women of colour who do not get a fraction of the attention given to Petito, who was white.
