The head of music at St Andrew's College, Duncan Ferguson, has reflected on his students viral Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven cover.

Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Ferguson said he was surprised the performance was so popular, and that the school initially weren't even sure they'd film it.

"We never thought it would quite connect with people the way it has, which has been really gratifying."

He said St Andrew's has a number of talented students and staff so he was confident the group would be able to pull it off.

The classic Led Zeppelin rock song as part of a prizegiving ceremony in November, with about 3500 people in the audience watching.

The school said it "became the canvas for a showcase of the extraordinary talent within our school community", and the video was compiled "in response to high demand".

Ferguson was joined on Breakfast by students Mia Fraser and James McIver. Fraser, the lead guitarist, found the performance incredibly nerve-wracking.

"[I was] really nervous, my brain was not functioning, so I just let the muscle memory kick in."

McIver, who was playing the acoustic guitar, said rehearsals started a few months before the performance at the school's end of year prizegiving.

"It actually only came together about three days beforehand, but I think Mr Ferguson had trust in us that we could pull it off and we did I think."

Lead vocalist Grace Burnett wasn't available to speak with Breakfast this morning, but Ferguson said he was "incredibly proud of her".

Asked what next year's hit will be, Ferguson joked it's "a closely guarded secret".
