Runaway kangaroo punches arresting officer in Canada

December 5, 2023

A police officer was punched in the face while apprehending a kangaroo on the run for four days east of Toronto, Canada.

The marsupial and her adult offspring were being taken to a zoo in Quebec when the prison break took place on Thursday, the Durham Regional Police Service said today on Facebook.

The family were at a rest stop at Oshawa Zoo in Oshawa, Ontario, when the four-year-old kangaroo hopped over her handlers to freedom.

Attempts by officers and Toronto Zoo volunteers to capture the wily kangaroo before nightfall were unsuccessful.

The animal was on the run for four days before being spotted outside a home in Oshawa around 3am on Monday (local time).

A pair of officers closed in on the roo before grabbing her tail, as per advice from her handlers — but not before she landed a punch to the face of one of her captors.

"It's something that he and his platoon mates will be remembering for the rest of their careers," Staff Sergeant Chris Boileau told CBC Toronto.

The kangaroo is now safely behind bars after she "surrendered peacefully to police officers", the Durham Regional Police said on social media.

"Her four-day adventure has come to an end and she will continue on with her journey to Quebec in the near future."
