Much of the country will see rain this weekend according to MetService, with a series of fronts embedded within a moist northwest flow sweeping the country.

The heaviest falls are likely in the west and far north of the South Island, but rain is also forecast for much of the North Island.

Heavy rain watches are also in place for some areas in central New Zealand.

MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for the ranges of Tasman northwest of Motueka, Buller and Westland from Otira northwards until 4pm Sunday.

This morning, 100 to 140mm of rain is expected in the area, with peak rates of 15 to 25mm an hour.

A heavy rain warning is also in place for Bryant and Richmond ranges until 3pm, where about 40 to 60mm of rain in addition to what has already accumulated is expected, with peak rates of 10 to 15mm per hour.

“Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous,” said MetService.

MetService has also issued heavy rain watches for the Tararua Range (until 11pm) and Mount Taranaki (until 9pm).

“Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria.”
