Dogs fall ill after mystery substance washes up on Hawke's Bay beach

December 2, 2023

At least two dogs have become sick after consuming an unknown, smelly substance that washed ashore at a Hawke's Bay beach overnight.

Hawke's Bay Regional Council said on its Facebook page last night that a "fatty substance with an odour" had washed up on the foreshore of Haumoana Beach south of Napier.

People have been advised not to swim at the beach and dog owners have been told to keep their dogs away from the water.

"We are working with Hastings District Council to find the cause of this incident, and will update you when we can," the council said.

One Facebook commenter said her dogs began vomiting after eating the substance.
