A mother and her eight-week-old child somehow escaped serious injury after their SUV was hit head-on by another vehicle that was being chased by police.

The incident took place in Perth yesterday and saw a white Commodore hit a Mazda CX3, clip a Mitsubishi Outlander before slamming into a Hyundai Tucson head-on, 9News reports.

"She went on the wrong side of the road, they had a head-on crash with a lady in her 20s with an eight-week-old baby in the car," Commissioner Col Blanch said.

"It's a high-risk manoeuvre but I support the officers who've made that decision but also our thoughts and hearts go out to the innocent motorist who was caught up in it."

The mother in the Hyundai spent the night in hospital while her young child went home with relatives.

A woman and her three children who were in the Mitsubishi were not injured.

Police were chasing a man who allegedly hit a woman in the back of her head with a machete during a home invasion.

The man along with the driver, a 22-year-old woman, were captured at the scene of the crash. They suffered broken bones and were under police guard in hospital. Meth was allegedly found in their car.

They face a raft of charges.
