A herd of elephants in Malaysia trampled a car after it slammed into a baby member of the group.

The vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old man, along with his wife and son, was travelling on a major road from the island of Penang to the northeastern state of Terengganu on Sunday evening (local time) when it crashed into the elephant calf, CNN reports.

Local police said it was drizzly and foggy at the time of the accident, and the car was “negotiating a left bend on the highway”.

“The car slammed into the young elephant that was walking on the road with the herd,” Zulkifli Mahmood, Chief Superintendent at Gerik District Police, said in a statement.

He said the calf fell to the ground after the impact.

Seeing the calf on the ground, five other elephants rushed towards the car and started trampling it.

When the calf eventually got up again, the herd moved on.

There were no injuries reported in the trampling, but photos show extensive damage to the car.

The condition of the baby elephant is unknown.
