Actor Kim Crossman has today revealed her heartbreak after having a miscarriage.
The 33-year-old took to social media this evening to announce her loss with partner Tom Walsh.
In a photo posted to Instagram, Crossman can be seen laying in a hospital bed.
"Sadly, last week Tom and I lost our baby. I have really been struggling with it this past week," the post began.
While the couple had initially planned to keep their journey private, Crossman ultimately decided it was "something we should share because so many women have walked this path before me and not many people talk about the emotional toll things like this might take and how best to navigate this kind of grief as a couple, family or as individuals".
The actor and author, who also hosts the podcast Pretty Depressed — where she shares her "journey with depression and anxiety" and the tools she's learned to help cope — said she felt she couldn't "share all the sparkly things we do online and not be honest about some of the struggles".
She continued: "This past week has been incredibly heavy and I have been in a huge battle internally with my brain which has been unkind and not helpful... feeling moments of shame, confusion and fear of the 'next time' we get pregnant possibly being clouded by this experience.
"Statistically this is a very common experience but sometimes logic and emotions aren't aligned."
Crossman said while her social media over the past few weeks showed "many great moments", including trying on wedding dresses and nesting in preparation for her growing family, it was also punctuated with private moments of "bursting into tears, wearing a diaper hoping no one would notice and avoiding alone time to prevent spiralling".
She said the couple "will share more about this when I am in a better place and after I get some professional help".
"I will share the journey of healing because I have a responsibility to take what I learn in this next chapter and make those tools available to others if they unfortunately have to walk this path too. Our condolences to anyone who has had these experiences," she said.
"A problem shared is a problem halved and it sounds like there is a lot of people who walk this path behind closed doors. Hopefully we can create some good and helpful dialogue in the wake of this heartbreak."
Crossman and Walsh got engaged in September after meeting on the set of Snack Masters NZ earlier this year.
