Police say there is no cause for concern after a "planned bird cull" sparked a firearm sighting and University of Auckland alert to evacuate parts of its city campus.
Earlier, the university said an "armed offender" was seen on the campus. In an update just after 9am, a police spokesperson clarified the situation.
"Police have confirmed that a reported sighting of a firearm at the University of Auckland campus this morning related to a planned bird cull in the area.
"There is no risk to public safety and no cause for concern."
At around 8am, an alert sent to university staff said police were responded to "a male carrying a firearm." People had earlier been urged to avoid parts of the campus.
The Herald reports armed officers and police dogs could be seen roaming common spaces, around the campus earlier, but that they have since left the scene.
