Three men have been dramatically winched to safety this morning after sending a mayday call from a yacht 50 miles north of New Plymouth.
Auckland's Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew were alerted to the mayday for a vessel in distress just after 8:30am.
A spokesperson said the Rescue Coordination Centre tasked Westpac 1 with assisting the search and rescue of a yacht with three people onboard, all believed to be males in their 50s.
Due to adverse weather conditions, all three men were asked to jump in the water before being "safely extracted by winch and then flown to our base at Ardmore".
"They were shaken but suffered no injuries and were glad to be on their way home."
