Alabama local Kayla was 12 weeks pregnant when she started feeling pressure in her abdomen. She said she was fearing a miscarriage, so she went to the hospital.
Dr George Crawford thought Kayla may have appendicitis and prepped her for surgery, but when inspecting Kayla with a laparoscopic camera, he found the mass.
The mass was stuck to her abdominal wall and was the cause of her pain.
Crawford explained the mass is called a teratoma, which is a group of cells that were stuck- in this case, in her ovaries. Over time, the cells grew to an overlarge size and had lost its blood supply, making her ovary twist.
After making an incision in the mass, he discovered pus, hair and teeth growing in Kayla's teratoma.
After emptying the mass, he also found bone.
"You don't see them too often with a tooth," Crawford said.
"You can have anything in a teratoma, so it's kind of like a present when you find one."
