A woman in the US has been left out of pocket after being charged more than US$7000 (NZ$11,590) – for a Subway sandwich.

Atlanta woman Vera Conner discovered the charge on her credit card statement after ordering her usual Italian sub from a Subway in College Park.

“I could have gone to Italy and got the sandwich,” Conner told WSB-TV Channel 2.

While the sandwich typically costs US$7.54 (NZ$12.48), the bill charged to her credit card was a costly $7112.98 (NZ$11,774.76).

She believes the exorbitant charge occurred when she was entering her phone number, when the screen suddenly changed to tip.

Conner had been trying to get the charge reversed for nearly a month with no success.

She said the store manager refused to discuss the incident, and her attempt to dispute the charge with her credit card company was denied.

“This is unbelievable because I feel like everyone that sees it, has to know that it’s a mistake. I’ve worked in retail before. I know how we tally up at the end of the night,” Conner said.

Subway is now processing the chargeback after it was tagged in a post on social media on Tuesday.
