The North Island is set for heavy bombardments of rain from today until late Tuesday, MetService has advised.
On its severe weather information page, the agency said a low pressure system approaching from the northwest will begin moving across northern parts of the country today.
"The low is expected to slowly move northeast away from the North Island during Monday and Tuesday and weaken," MetService said. "Rain is expected to affect many North Island places, and a Warning and several Watches for heavy rain are in place."
An orange-level heavy rain warning is in place for The Ruahine Range and the inland ranges of Hawke's Bay, with 120-150mm of rainfaill expected to accumulate from 10pm tonight until 4am Tuesday.
Multiple yellow-level heavy rain watches began this morning for Coromandel Peninsula, ending at 4pm this afternoon, as well as Taranaki and Bay of Plenty west of Whakatane, both ending late Sunday into early Monday.
Tairawhiti/Gisborne, Wairarapa from about Carterton northwards, the Tararua District not including the Ruahine Range and Hawke's Bay not including the inland ranges all have heavy rain watches beginning from 10pm tonight, all ending early to mid-Tuesday.
MetService advises affected people to keep up to date with its severe weather information page, the next update scheduled for 9pm tonight.
