Burglars who broke into the offices of South African Rugby Union made off with five signed Springbok jerseys, whiskey and laptops, but not the World Cup trophy.

CCTV footage shows one of the thieves putting his gloved hand on a replica of the Webb Ellis Cup for a moment before moving on to the cupboards below.

The break-in occurred at an office complex in northern Cape Town which the rugby union shares with other tenants.

Police were initially concerned that the trophy could have been stolen, but a South Africa Rugby Union spokesperson confirmed that all its trophies were safe.

The actual Webb Ellis Cup was stored in a safe at the time of the break-in.

No arrests have been made.

South Africa won the Rugby World Cup for a record fourth time on October 28 after beating the All Blacks 12-11 in Paris.
