Why was David Beckham watching the Black Caps in India?

November 16, 2023

Former football superstar David Beckham was among those in attendance as the Black Caps bravely fell short of a place in cricket's World Cup final.

New Zealand was unable to chase down India's mammoth target of 398 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, falling 70 runs short of a spot in a third consecutive final despite Daryl Mitchell's stunning 134.

Among those watching was former England football captain Beckham, subject of a recent Netflix mini-series who was at the match in his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Also there as a Goodwill Ambassador was Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar.

"I have come to India for the first time at the right time," Beckham said. "I have been here for Diwali, I have been here for New Year, and now I am here for my first game at the World Cup. It's very special.

"I love coming to great stadiums and great atmospheres," he added. "Obviously, this is one of the best. Before the match even started, you walk out here and you feel there's something special at this stadium. I felt that before the match started. I feel very humbled and very lucky to be here."

Before the match he met Kiwi bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee, and spoke with Indian batsman Virat Kohli.

India will meet the winner of tonight's clash between Australia and South Africa in the decider.
