More than 450 homes are without power in Dunedin's south after a single-vehicle crash brought down powerlines this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to a crash in Green Island around 3.15pm.

"No injuries are reported at this time, but powerlines have been brought down and work is underway to remove them," said a police spokesperson.

Main South Rd is closed near Carnforth St and diversions are in place.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to expect delays.

Aurora Energy's website shows an unplanned outage in the area, affecting 462 customers.

It is "currently unknown" when power will be restored.
