It's no secret British comedian John Oliver has a strong love for New Zealand, but he's also enjoyed making fun at Kiwis' expense multiple times over the years.
"New Zealand, you are so good at not just talking s***, but taking it with remarkable good humour," he said just yesterday on his show Last Week Tonight.
Let's take a look back at just five of the many times Oliver's made fun of Aotearoa:
1 The Steven Joyce dildo drama
Back in 2016, a protester flung a dildo at National MP Steven Joyce when he was at Waitangi.
At the time, a segment aired on Last Week Tonight, in which Oliver included a custom-made dildo flag being waved by Sir Peter Jackson.
"To New Zealand's credit, the woman who threw the toy was not charged with anything," he said.
"If you threw something at a politician in this country you'd be dead before the dildo hit the ground," Oliver laughed.
2 NZ's flag referendum
Everyone remembers New Zealand's flag referendum back in 2015, especially Oliver.
At the time, the comedian had extensive coverage about the vote on his show, even showcasing some of his own designs for the potential new flag.
"We have a few suggestions, first, how about a flag that features two things New Zealand is famous for such as a bungy jumping sheep or if you don't like that one, a kiwi bird having sex with a hobbit," he joked.
3 Eminem's lawsuit against National
The National Party used a song Eminem Esque in its 2014 election advertisement and as a result Eight Mile Style and Martin Affiliated, owner of Eminem's music on which the song was based, took them to court.
Campaign manager Steven Joyce's comments that the party thought the use of the music was "pretty legal" really got Oliver going.
Turns out it wasn't pretty legal at all when in 2017 the High Court determined Eminem Esque breached copyright of Eminem's Academy Award-winning Lose Yourself, and ordered the National Party to pay $600,000.
Oliver found the situation hilarious and also took great joy in mocking Kiwis' pronunciation of the rapper's name.
4 NZ being left off world maps
In 2019 Oliver poked fun at New Zealand after the country was left off IKEA's world map.
Oliver offered a hilarious solution to stop this from happening, by creating a print out stick on image that can be added to any map New Zealand has been left off.
"Tonight we are going to try and help them out by giving people a practical way to put things right here, so if you go to our Twitter feed you will find a map of New Zealand that you can cut out and add to any map of your choosing," he said on his show at the time.
5 Hijacking Bird of The Century
Fast forward to 2023 and Oliver threw his hat in the ring for New Zealand's prestigious Bird of the Century competition — becoming the self-declared official campaigner for one of the candidates.
The competition went global, with Oliver revealing he would be voting.
"Even its name is fun to say," Oliver said before repeating "pūteketeke" a number of times. "It feels like your tongue is tap dancing."
This morning Forest & Bird announced — shock! — that the pūteketeke has won the Bird of the Century title.
A big fan of ours really
Despite his love of laughing at New Zealand, Oliver has also praised us over the years.
After the Christchurch Mosque attacks, the comedian labelled Aotearoa's response to the tragedy as "amazing".
"New Zealand is an incredible place and I know we make fun of it on this show all the time. Honestly, there is nothing I like more than making fun of New Zealand, but part of that may be that controversies over there tend to get handled with calm and good cheer."
