A lockdown at a Dunedin high school has been lifted after it received a threat this morning.

An update around 10.40am said that nothing of concern was located at the school.

"Some police staff will remain in the area this morning to provide reassurance to the school and local community."

Police were advised the school had received a threat by email at 8.45am.

"The school has been placed into lockdown as a precaution," a spokesperson said at the time.

Stuff reported a "large number" of armed police were at the Bayfield High School scene.

A Facebook post from the school confirmed the incident.

"This post is to inform parents and caregivers that the school is currently in lockdown," the post at about 9.15am said.

"We ask parents and caregivers to please not come to the school site. All students are currently safe and we will update you with information as soon as possible."
