A driver sought by police after a 6-year-old boy was the victim of a hit-and-run on Saturday evening has been found.

The incident happened around 7.45pm when a group of "young children" were walking home after playing at a park in the Castlecliff area.

While crossing the street near the intersection of Rangiora St, the 6-year-old boy was struck by a "small light blue hatchback-sized car". The driver didn't stop.

The boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police said this morning it had been able to identify and locate the vehicle and driver.

"Police want to thank the public for the information they provided and inquiries into the incident remain ongoing," a spokesperson said.

"We are still interested in CCTV footage anyone in the area may have of a small light blue hatchback-sized car."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 105.
