A 19-year-old Irish man has appeared in court today after allegedly trying to smuggle nearly two kilograms of methamphetamine into the country.

He was arrested on Saturday after customs officers at Auckland Airport searched his bag, discovering 1.9 kilograms of meth "in the lining of five cardboard boxes".

"Customs officers noticed inconsistencies in one of the x-rayed packages, and further examination confirmed the white substance in the lining of the box was methamphetamine,” customs manager Auckland Airport Paul Williams said.

Customs estimate 95,500 doses could have been created from the 1.9kg, with a street value of $669,000 and the potential to cause $2 million in social harm.

Williams said it was "satisfying" to intercept the drugs, and "customs officers remain constantly vigilant to prevent the efforts of criminals trying to exploit and harm our communities through their drug smuggling endeavours".

The man appeared in Manukau District Court today, charged with importing a Class A controlled drug and possession of a Class A controlled drug for supply.
