Multiple crews have spent the morning battling a large vegetation fire at a beach in Invercargill.

Nine crews were sent to Oreti Beach after a vegetation fire was sparked at around 5.20am.

Around 25 firefighters were sent to the scene, working to fight the blaze, which Fire and Emergency New Zealand said was 200 to 300 meters large. It has since been contained.

Four firetrucks, three tankers, two rural appliances and a command unit were sent to fight the flames.

Two helicopters are at the scene, and FENZ has started to pull back its groundcrews.

Crews will now be using heavy machinery to extinguish the fire.

There are no reports of injuries.
