A new ferry service connecting Central Auckland and Waiheke Island begins this week, but locals doubt the new competition will do anything to ease costs.

The Island Direct Ferry launches on Monday, running 18 return journeys a day between the Downtown Ferry and Matiatia Terminal.

Until now, Fullers 360 had been the sole service provider on the popular route, plagued by capacity and cost issues.

Island Direct co-owner David Todd said some sailings will be a 45-minute turnaround.

“We have got bookings coming in all the time, so we are pretty excited.”

Waiheke Local Board chair Cath Handley said that while she is “delighted” about the extra service it won’t fix the long-standing issue of cost.

“I don’t think people realise what that cost is for a commuter, its hundreds of dollars a month.”

She was disappointed to hear that NZTA were advising the Government against publicly subsidising the route.

Fullers 360 CEO Mike Horne said that NZTA’s decision shows it provides an equitable service and welcomes the new challenger.

“There’s plenty to go around for everyone and I think this summer is going to be exceptionally good.”

The Island Direct Ferry will set sail for the first time from the Downtown Ferry Terminal at 6am on Monday, November 13.
