Peters, Seymour join forces to negotiate with National

November 10, 2023

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters and ACT's David Seymour have joined forces to negotiate with the National Party after not getting what they want, 1News understands.

It's understood there has been a "significant warming of relations" between the pair.

ACT and NZ First will work together on race relations, infrastructure and climate change, 1News understands.

It's understood incoming prime minister Christopher Luxon wants to get coalition talks wrapped up to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in San Francisco next week, and both ACT and NZ First will use this as a negotiating tool to try and get more policy wins.

It follows two meetings between Peters and Seymour – the first held yesterday at ACT's offices, which lasted about 15 minutes.

The second came this morning when Seymour came to Peters. That meeting lasted about 10 minutes.

Today, Seymour said the pair's first meeting had been "congenial, and hopeful and promising". He believed he could "work well together" with Peters.

The two have a long-documented hostility, including an ACT Party billboard during the election campaign which showed a picture of Peters, warning voters to not be "fooled again".

The NZ First caucus is heading back to Auckland this afternoon. The National leader will also be in Auckland tomorrow.
