A man has been charged with murdering an Ellerslie couple following the discovery of a woman's body in north Auckland overnight.

The investigation opened after Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok, 66, was found dead by a family member at their Ellerslie property on Monday evening.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said this morning the man's wife Mei Han Chong has now been found dead in Greenhithe, about 30kms away, overnight.

Police said yesterday they feared she had also been the victim of foul play.

Beard announced the arrest at a conference this morning.

"Auckland police have sadly located the missing 67-year-old Mei Han Chong deceased," he said.

"As a result of our inquiries, a male has been taken into custody overnight.

"This Glenfield man, who we believe to be involved, was identified and located by detectives in Hamilton late last night, and has now been charged with two counts of murder.

"The 42-year-old male is due to appear in the Auckland District Court this morning."

Beard said the couple's missing Kia car was discovered near an unrelated property on Hall Rd in Glenfield with different number plates on it.

Based on activity near the family's home in Ellerslie, police were able to scour "hours and hour" of CCTV to locate a vehicle of interest.

"We are of course devastated to locate Mrs Chong in these circumstances, and we are now providing support to their son, who has lost both his mother and his father."

A scene guard remains at the Ellerslie home and Beard said there would be an increased police presence across Auckland today.

"At this stage we're not ruling out further charges or arrests in relation to this matter.

Beard said at this stage there were no links to organised crime.

Asked about the car, Beard said: "Based on CCTV, it had different registration numbers at times."

The son is aged in his 30s.
