A severe thunderstorm warning has been lifted for South Waikato and Taupō this evening.
At 5pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Tokoroa, Mangakino and Waipapa.
These severe thunderstorms were expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain and frequent lighting which could cause surface flooding, power surges and damage to electrical equipment.
They were moving south and expected to lie near Tokoroa, Whakamaru, Mangakino and Waipapa at 5.30pm.
A severe thunderstorm watch remains in force until 10pm for Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo and Taihape.
Localised rainfall of 25-40mm an hour and hail are possible in these areas.
