The Crusaders, never afraid to think outside the box and target overseas signings, have confirmed that Wales international Leigh Halfpenny will play for them next season.
Halfpenny, a fullback who played more than 100 Tests, scored 801 points for Wales – the third highest in the nation's history.
He retired from internationals at the weekend after helping his country to a 49-26 victory over the Barbarians in Cardiff, a win earned against a side coached by former Crusaders coach Scott Robertson, who was assisting Eddie Jones.
Robertson, who led the Crusaders to seven consecutive titles, has now started his tenure as All Blacks head coach after replacing Ian Foster.
Halfpenny, 34, is the latest international to play for the Crusaders after Pablo Matera’s successful stint in Christchurch last year, the Argentina loose forward a hugely influential part of his team’s run to their final victory over the Blues at Eden Park.
Halfpenny will add welcome experience to an outside back division including Will Jordan, Sevu Reece, Macca Springer and Chay Fihaki in the absence of All Blacks first-five Richie Mo’unga, who has left to play in Japan, and midfielder Jack Goodhue, who has left for France.
Veteran lock Sam Whitelock has also left to play in France.
He also has the ability to play first-five which could be helpful given Fergus Burke, the likely incumbent, is recovering from an Achilles injury.
“I’ve always watched Super Rugby and the Crusaders are the team I’ve always followed,” Halfpenny said.
“I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to join one of the best clubs in the world and I can’t wait to meet everyone.
“I’ve always loved the time I’ve spent in New Zealand on tour. It’s a passionate rugby nation and I’ve always been made to feel very much at home there. My family and I are very excited about the move.”
Crusaders coach Rob Penney described the move as “a massive coup for us”.
“Leigh’s a footballer with a huge amount of experience, charisma and skill,” Penney said.
“We had our feelers out for a while and Leigh was finishing up his time with Wales and still had a big desire to play at the highest level, so it’s a great fit for us.
“Leigh adds even more maturity to our backline, while also bringing in some Northern Hemisphere perspective, so yeah, we’re excited about what he’ll bring into camp."
Halfpenny, who debuted for Wales in 2008, played in three World Cups. He will be moving from Welsh club Scarlets, previously coached by former Crusaders assistant Brad Mooar.
Halfpenny confirmed he had spoken to Robertson about joining the Crusaders after the Barbarians game.
"He's so excited for me to be coming over and joining the Crusaders... what he's achieved with the team is incredible and look forward to hopefully continuing that success," he said.
