New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has claimed 1News ignored him while campaigning in the lead up to the general election.

Peters, who was speaking to media at the Auckland Diwali Festival today, repeatedly told 1News to “take the camera away” when approached with questions.

“Nobody ignores me for a whole campaign and gets to talk to me after it,” said Peters.

1News reporter Katie Bradford responded, saying 1News did not ignore him during the campaign.

“Sorry, yes you did,” replied Peters. “You know it as clear as day.”

It comes after Peters refused to answer a total of 27 questions in Wellington airport last month.

Yesterday the Electoral Commission released the final results for the 2023 election. The results showed that National will require the support of both ACT and New Zealand First to form a government.

Once special votes - which have historically tended to skew left - were counted, the National Party had two fewer seats - from 50 to 48. The Green Party has gained one seat to a new total of 15.

Te Pāti Māori has also seized two further Māori electorate seats - Tāmaki Makaurau and Te Tai Tokerau, which at the last election were won by Labour’s Peeni Henare and Kelvin Davis respectively.

New Zealand First now have eight seats, which will be required to form a government.
