Rampaging koala thief returns to life of crime with new accomplices

November 4, 2023

Claude the koala, who went viral after sneaking into an Australian nursery and eating eucalyptus seedlings, has struck again – but this time, he's brought the family.

The sticky-pawed thief is a repeat offender who fills his belly with seedlings being grown for koala habitat restoration projects at Eastern Forest Nursery in New South Wales, Nine reports.

But on four different nights in September and October, Claude has been found guilty of bringing with him two accomplices – a mother and her joey.

The marsupial was caught red-pawed on a sensor camera set up by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

"I think Claude has introduced his partner and joey to the all-you-can-eat buffet, now that she's eating for two," nursery owner Humphrey Herington said.

Claude has even extended his snacking times to daylight hours, sneaking into the nursery during the day – a change for the nocturnal animal.

Herington said while their antics may be entertaining, the family's eating habits indicate there is a "desperate need for more koala food trees".

WWF is working to plant more seedlings around the nurseries to hopefully stop Claude – or his accomplices – from breaking in for a midnight snack.
