MetService has lifted a severe thunderstorm warning for the Central Hawke's Bay area this evening.

At 06.37pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Waipukurau and Waipawa.

They were expected to lie near Waipukurau and Omakere at 7.07pm, and near Omakere at 7.37pm.

Those thunderstorms were expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain, hail and damaging wind gusts which could have caused surface flooding, damaged crops and made driving conditions hazardous, MetService said.

The region remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9pm tonight.
