Watch: Stamenic becomes second Kiwi to score in Champions League

October 26, 2023

All Whites midfielder Marko Stamenic has etched his name into New Zealand football history after becoming just the second Kiwi to score in the Champions League.

Stamenic scored during Red Star Belgrade's 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig this morning in just his sixth appearance in the competition, having made three appearances in the Champions League with FC Copenhagen last season.

Still, the 21-year-old had every right to celebrate in the 70th minute when he volleyed home a deflection from close range, joining New Zealand football great Wynton Rufer as the only Kiwis to score in club football's top competition.

Rufer is widely regarded as one of if not New Zealand's best footballer, having won the German League, two German Cups, and scored the winning goal in the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners final while playing for Werder Bremen.

Stamenic's goal this morning gave Red Star Belgrade brief hopes of a comeback but they were quickly snuffed out 14 minutes later when Dani Olmo secured the win for Leipzig.

The 3-1 loss leaves the Serbian club firmly in last in Group G with Manchester City riding high in the same pool with three wins from three matches.

City's latest triumph was a 3-1 win over Young Boys this morning in which Erling Haaland scored a brace to continue his incredible run in the competition, having now scored 37 goals in 33 Champions League games.
