A rural Canterbury grandfather has built the house of a lifetime – after winning an Air Force jet in an auction.

Leeston man Neil Mugford had been looking online for a flight of stairs for his grandkids' treehouse when he came across the perfect set – only to find they were still attached to a Boeing 727.

Four years on – and $283 well spent – the former farmer and mechanic and his wife Sue are about to move into their new aeroplane house, complete with fuselage, landing gear and one wing.

It was retired in 2003 after 22 years of service – but not before making plenty of memories.

"We get people drive past and scream to a stop 'cause they worked on it or flown in it or flown it or whatever," Mugford explained.

"It's quite amazing, the number of people that have got a connection. Air Force people seem to remember all their special planes, obviously."

Seven Sharp reporter Jendy Harper went along for a grand tour in the video above.
