Strong winds in Canterbury saw a truck roll on SH1 Waipara.

Strong winds lashing parts of the South Island have seen a truck roll on State Highway 1 in Canterbury.

The region is currently under a strong wind watch, with MetService warning that "driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles".

A raft of other weather watches and warnings in place across the country — for heavy rain, strong winds and snow — are due to an active front.

"This front is preceded by a strong and moist northwesterly flow, and is followed by strong and cold west to southwesterlies," MetService said.

On Omihi Rd near Mt Cass Road, a truck was blown over shortly after 10.40am, blocking both north and southbound lanes for around two hours. Congestion has since eased.

Nobody was injured in the crash, police said.
