Man turns himself in after woman assaulted, suspicious house fire

A man wanted for arrest by police after a woman was assaulted and a "suspicious house fire" was reported in the Hawke's Bay town of Waipukurau on Tuesday has turned himself in.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sally Patrick said emergency services were called to a suspicious house fire at a Woburn St address in Waipukurau.

A woman was found at a neighbouring address with injuries and was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Police have issued a warrant to arrest for a 51-year-old man over the incident.

This afternoon Patrick issued an update stating the man has now turned himself in.

"He will appear in the Hastings District Court tomorrow, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

"Further charges may be filed as the investigation progresses."
