For some people, talk of reindeer, tinsel, and Santa two months before the big day arrives might be a bit of a humbug — but for others, Christmas can't come soon enough.

How early is too early to put up your Christmas decorations? And the most divisive question of all - to tinsel or not to tinsel?

Christmas expert James Cooper spoke to Breakfast about the etiquette of Christmas decorating.

Feeling festive and decorating your home in August might be considered a bit of a stretch, and September a tad enthusiastic. What about October?

"I've started putting things up, and we're getting in the mood," Cooper enthused.

The festive fanatic also shared a brief history of Christmas decorating.

"We've been using greenery like holly and ivy and things to decorate houses in northern Europe during winter for thousands of years. Basically, they brighten the place up, they make it smell quite nice and also have some insecticide properties.

"Back in the Middle Ages when it was all a bit dirty and grubby you had some things that kept the insects at bay, which was a good thing to have during winter," he said.

"Christmas trees came in during the 15 and 1600s to northern Germany, and then they spread around the world from the 1840s and 1850s."

Is there such a thing as being too early or too late with festive decor?

"Each to their own, frankly," Cooper said. "I go for around the first of September to go full-out because I don't want to look too mad. Taking [decorations] down... generally, the agreed date is the fifth or sixth of January, which is when Epiphany is.

"But if you're really desperate, you can hang on until the second of February, which is Candlemass, the official end of the Christmas season."

But Christmas is never really over in Cooper's household.

"I've got some bits and bobs that stay up the whole year and I get some odd looks," he said. "My Wi-fi network's also called Christmas Land, which really puzzled a visitor the other day."

Traditions are important, and so is reusing the same decorations every year.

"I like reusing things - it's part of the tradition of Christmas. You can make your own traditions up and how you want to celebrate Christmas," said Cooper.

And finally, the big tinsel question.

"I don't have any tinsel on my tree, but I hang it out the front of my house," he said.
