The Canterbury University student facing weapons charges will keep his identity secret for now, after one charge was withdrawn and replaced with another.

The 20-year-old appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday morning, accused of being in possession of an extendable baton and a knife.

Police allegedly found the offensive weapons at Tupuānuku Hall on Thursday morning.

On the court documents, police said the man had the intention "to use it [baton] to commit an offence involving bodily injury or the threat of violence or the fear of violence".

Police withdrew possession of a restricted weapon charge and replaced it with a charge of possession of an offensive weapon.

The student's lawyer said the restricted weapon charge should never have been laid and that he was facing no firearms charges.

He asked the judge to grant his client interim name suppression and to suppress the summary of facts.

The man will reappear in court on November 15.
