Incredible footage has captured a fire tornado tearing across scrub land in Western Australia last Tuesday.

The video was taken by firefighters with the Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services (WA DFS) in the remote St George Ranges, nearly 1700km northeast of Perth.

The "firenado" crossed 6.2km of scrub in just 15 minutes.

The phenomenon was described as a "willy willy".

Most commonly known as dust devils, they tend to occur in desert and semi-arid areas, where the ground is dry and high surface temperatures produce updrafts.

WA DFS say that the fire is being treated as suspicious.
