Diving equipment and a smartwatch have been found in the search for a missing Wellington man, who disappeared after setting out on a dive last week.

Jinting Guo has been missing since last Thursday, when police say he went on a dive around Titahi Bay, near Porirua.

Land Search and Rescue and Surf Life Saving have been searching for the 35-year-old since he was officially reported missing to police on Sunday night.

Police said yesterday they had located Guo's car, a grey station wagon.

Authorities are continuing to appeal to the public for sightings of Guo last Thursday and if any diving gear has been spotted on the coastline nearby.

"Yesterday, a member of the public reported finding diving equipment, including a smartwatch, on the shore of Tirau Bay," a police spokesperson said today.

"With the assistance of Surf Life Saving, shoreline searches were conducted between Onehunga Bay and Green Point yesterday.

"The search effort continues today, with Land Search and Rescue Wellington conducting land-based shoreline searches.

"Police are consulting with local iwi and conducting other enquiries to locate Jingting. This includes establishing his possible dive and swim path."

The 35-year-old had "recently begun diving" and had taken his diving gear with him when he left home on Thursday, according to police earlier.

On Monday, police had appealed for sightings of Guo's vehicle before it was found on Terrace Road, near Tihati Bay.

"He was driving his car, a grey 2011 Audi Q7 station wagon, registration number GAS511."

People with information are urged to contact police on 105.
