Four youths have been taken into custody following what a police spokesperson described as a "lengthy" fleeing driver incident across Auckland this morning.
Police initially received a report of a car "driving recklessly" in the Flat Bush area around 8am, according to a spokesperson. At the scene, officers located the car, "which they had confirmed as having earlier been stolen, and signalled the driver to stop."
"The driver failed to do so and fled at high speed," police said.
"Police did not pursue the car due to the manner of driving, however officers continued to monitor the car via the Eagle helicopter.
"The driver continued to drive in an extremely dangerous manner across all three Tāmaki Makaurau police districts - including at one point driving the incorrect way down State Highway 16 at high speed.
"Road spikes were deployed and the car was successfully spiked on State Highway 1, near Dome Valley, at around 9.50am. Enquiries are in progress to determine what charges may be brought against the youths."
The distance between Flat Bush and State Highway 1, near Dome Valley, is about 80km.
