Incoming prime minister Christopher Luxon was greeted with high-fives and a haka at his old school in Auckland today.

Bright sunshine and bright smiles met Luxon as he entered Cockle Bay School.

"I love it, this was a very special place," he said on his way in.

"I had amazing teachers and a great headmaster so it was a great place to grow up in."

Luxon was then welcomed with a waiata and haka by the school's current students.

He was later swamped by enthusiastic youngsters, who each wanted to give him a high-five.

"To come back and see you as prime minister-elect is really exciting," Luxon told the students.

He then took a tour of the school, talking to kids and visiting classrooms.

Luxon said he made the visit to "reconnect" with his Botany electorate.

The trip was likely a welcome break from talk around the political table as he waits for the special votes to come in.

The Electoral Commission estimated there are 567,000 special votes, which will be tallied up and the results announced on November 3.

It remains to be seen whether National will be able to form a two-party coalition with ACT or will also need the support of New Zealand First.
